RISING AND SETTING OF THE SUN
RISING AND SETTING OF THE SUN

While living on the Earth, we observe the rising of the Sun from the East and its setting in the West. The Sun appears to be moving slowly from the East and setting in the West. The next morning the Sun repeats this action.

Cardinal Directions

There are four cardinal directions i.e. East, West, South and North. In the morning, if we stand facing the rising Sun, East is in front of us, West is behind us, South is at our right hand and North is at our left hand. An instrument is used to find directions this is called a Compass. The needle of Compass always points the North.

Length of Shadow due to the movement of the Sun

The shadow is formed when any obstacle comes in the way of sunlight. For example, if any object comes in the way of sunlight, it blocks the small amount of sunlight according to its volume and size. In this way, the shadow of that object is formed. The length of shadow changes according to the movement of the Sun. Observation shows it clear that in the morning and evening, the length of shadow formed by the sunlight is longer (than the actual object) and at noon, shadow becomes shorter.

Determination of time with the help of the shadow of the Sun

Sometimes we think about the ancient people. How did people estimate time when there were no watches in olden days? At that time, people used to estimate time with the help of the shadow of the Sun. In the morning after the sunrise, the shadow of an object is longer in length. When the Sun gradually reaches to its highest point in the sky, the shadow becomes shorter. By this, the ancient people estimated the time that it was noon. When the Sun is setting, the length of the shadow gets longer again. By this, the ancient people estimated that it was the time of afternoon and evening. In ancient times, an instrument was used to measure the shadow of the Sun which was called Sundial.
