Definition of Habitat
Habitat
(home) is a place where a living organism lives. The living organisms mould themselves
according to their habitats, and therefore, they remain secure from the effects
of heat and cold as well as their enemies. There are different habitats for
different animals. For example, crocodiles and fish live in water, beasts
(lion, panther, elephant etc.) live in forest and cactus plant is found in a
desert.
Different Types of Habitats
Polar Habitats
The
places in snow-covered areas (areas situated around North and South Poles) where
living organisms live are called polar habitats. Arctic and Antarctic Oceans
are included in Polar Regions. The Sun does not rise in these regions in winter
and there is less amount of sunlight during summer. These regions remain in the
grip of severe cold throughout the year. Polar bear, arctic rabbit, mouse, arctic wolf, caribou, seals,
arctic fox and different kinds of fish are the animals of Polar Regions.
Penguins, snowy owls etc. are the birds of these regions Algae, lichens etc.
are such plants which nourish in the severe cold.
Desert
Habitats
In the
world one 3rd of Earth consists of dry deserts. Cold deserts and hot deserts
both are found on the Earth. Due to lack of rain, the number of animals and
plants is very low in these areas. Camel, weasel, deer, African panther, wolf,
rabbit, desert tortoise, rat etc. are the animals of desert habitat. Similarly
owl, hawk, falcon, pheasant, different types of sparrows, dove, kite, vulture etc.
are the birds found in deserts. Different types of trees and plants are found
in desert habitat. These include cactus, date palm etc.
Forest
Habitats
The
area where animals, trees and plants are found in abundance is called forest
habitat The weather of this habitat is usually pleasant Wolf, giraffe, rabbit,
baboon, stag vixen, lion, panther, elephant, jackal, cat monkey, deer, bear,
snake and numerous animals live in this habitat Owl, cuckoo, peacock, parrot, pigeon
pheasant and different types of sparrows etc. are the birds found in this
habitat. Sandalwood, cedar, pine, fir, shisham poplar and acacia etc. are the
trees which are found here.
River
Habitats
The
water of rivers is the habitat of many animals. Hippopotamus, crane, water fowl
duck and different types of fish live in river habitat. Different types of
water plants are also found in the rivers. In Punjab, rivers of Indus, Jhelum,
Chenab, Ravi and Sutlej are river habitats.
Sea
Habitats
The
reservoir of salt water consisting of 2/3rd of Earth is called sea. Dolphin,
whale, jellyfish, starfish and various types of other fish, turtles, shrimps,
snail-shells and shells are the animals of sea habitat. Different types of
algae are marine plants of this habitat that supply. Food to marine animals.
