What is Horsepower?
What is horse power? Why is it called Horse power? Horse power to watt conversation?
Who invented horsepower? How horsepower works? Why horsepower ? why not dog power.
Definition of horsepower. How horsepower works. Basics of Horsepower.
What is horsepower ? |
In 1764
a Scottish Engineer James Watt invented 1st steam engine. After
his name Scientists named the unit of power as Watt. James watt invented
the Steam engine and after that he wanted to measure the power of the steam
engine or in other words he was trying to figure out the working
capacity of this heat engine.
To measure
the power of this heat engine he used an idea. He brought a horse, a
rope and mass of 75 kg. He attached one end of the rope with the horse and pass
this rope over the pulley and on the other end of the roof he attached
mass of 75 kg.
He
pushed the horse in forward direction and observed that horse can lift mass of
75kg up to the height of 1 meter in one second. And he said that the power
used by the horse to lift 75kg mass up to 1 m height is called 1 Horse Power
(1hp).
Now
we talk about the system of units used in this calculation. Now a days
two types of units are being used imperial units and Metric system
of units.
In imperial
system of units mass is measured in Pound and it is represented by lb. Unit
of height/length is foot and it is represented by ft. while unit of time is
second (s). In imperial System of unit 1hp=746 watts.
In Metric
system of units mass is measured in kilo grams and represented by kg, height/length
is measured in meter represented by m, and Time in seconds (s). In Metric
system of Units 1hp=736 watts.
Proof of 1hp= 746 watts
In this experiment James watt used
mass of 74.6 kg instead of 75 kg earlier we used approximate mass as 75 kg.
mass = m = 74.6 kg
Weight in newton = 74.6*10= 746 Nw
Force=F=746 Nw
Power=Work Done/Time
P=W/t
Work= force*displacement
P= F.D/t
P=746*1m/1 sec
P=746 watts
1hp=746 watts
